My products represent social groups and issues in a variety of ways. Social divisions and unrest are the main themes within my music video, and are presented through the song's pro-pacifist lyrics and implementations of found footage. These elements are implemented in order to represent the ongoing social issues within America. Footage of public protests against oppression within the outro of my video are used in order to further convey my artist’s alignment in support of the people and their social movement against police brutality. The music video’s themes link with my digipak, which is heavily focused on representing a younger demographic, using the title “A Hint of Disconnection” to directly align my product with consumers who are exposed to the violence within America. The song itself, “Where is the Love”, was made to directly handle themes of social unrest, meaning the music video in its entirety plays a role in representing social groups and issues. My artist’s social media page represents social groups to an even larger extent, as the page is located on Instagram, a platform which is utilised by hundreds of millions of young adults. Because of this, my product is able to represent social minorities along with vocal groups on a ginormous scale, through circulating relevant information regarding ongoing social issues, as well as posting the artist’s personal views in order to personally represent social groups.
The elements of my production work together through a multitude of ways in order to create a sense of branding. My digipak follows a specific colour scheme, incorporating eye-catching colours with the text in a way which grabs the reader’s attention. The unique style of my digipak is done to promote the idea that my artist is alternate, and stands out from other musicians. The abstract use of colours within my digipak can be linked to the similarly abstract style of my social media page, which utilises attention-grabbing colours and lighting in order to attract the viewer’s gaze. A sense of “branding” is further enforced through my social media page, as I’ve included posts which advertise branded merchandise, such as hoodies, t-shirts, and hats. The artwork used on my products all utilise the same aesthetics and themes of my artist, strengthening the unique atmosphere of my artist’s image. The music duo (who appear on my artist’s social media page) are both present within my music video, and clearly identify the production as my artist's work. The theme of eye-catching colours is also consistent within my music video, and various visual effects and colour corrections are implemented in order to make the production as visually appealing as possible. Other elements of my production, such as establishing the producers at the start of the music video, further create a sense of branding.
Product engagement with the audience can mainly be seen throughout my social media page, however there are also noticeable aspects of interaction within my music video and digipak. My social media page is able to engage with the audience through the behind-the-scenes atmosphere of my posts, which makes the viewer feel included within the duo’s everyday life. The use of merchandise posts within my social media platform also engages with the audience, as it allows consumers to actively interact with my artist, and make them feel included through wearing branded clothing to identify themselves as dedicated fans. Further engagement with the audience on my media page can be recognised through the use of eye-catching thumbnail colours for my posts and story-playlists. Engagement through my digipak can be seen with the use of bright colours which stand out in comparison to other digipaks, and effectively grab the attention of the audience. My music video engages with the audience through handling socially relevant themes in today’s society, such as the rising tensions within America and how the police have responded brutally to protests. This idea of addressing major American issues, which my target audience knows about, creates a sense of unity and support within my music video, and engages with the viewer further as they feel connected to the referenced events. Engagement with the audience can lastly be seen as my social media page contains a direct link to my music video, allowing the viewer to interact and engage with more of my artist’s products.
My research on the codes and conventions of Hip Hop artists informed my social media page greatly, and a lot of my artist’s instagram account was structured to resemble that of an authentic hip hop group. This led to my account containing posts of merchandise and behind-the-scenes stills, which altogether led to my artist holding a style similar to that of groups like Outkast. Research into existing digipaks by groups such as Black Eyed Peas and Coldplay also assisted me greatly towards informing my products, as the knowledge that I gained inspired me to use abstract artwork within the panels of my digipak to challenge conventions, rather than conventional hip hop images or group photos My research into the Black Lives Matter protests, as well as other American protests such as the MacArthur Park rallies and the March for Our Lives demonstrations, gave me a great deal of insight on how to structure my music video as a socially relevant production. The use of social issues allowed me to fit my video within the Alternative style of artists such as the Black Eyed Peas. This research also allowed me to challenge conventions by having a music video which is nearly entirely devoted to informing people on the violence of the Black Lives Matter protests.
