My Production Logo
The logo for my production company in terms of appearance is relatively simple, however there are some details in the logo that help identify this company within the music industry. Headstock refers to a part of a guitar, which immediately aligns the production company with music. The gramophone record on which the text is placed on is used to further symbolise my production's specialisation in music, as well as adding a bold object to grab my audience's attention, bringing focus towards the company logo and the producers identity. In terms of the logo's relation to my music video, this logo will be flourished at the start of the video in order to make sure the viewer immediately sees who contributed in the video's production.

My Artist's Title: Somber Flipside
Somber Flipside is a Hip Hop group, consisting of multiple musicians who have banded together under the Somber Flipside artist name. When making this band, the majority of my inspiration came from the Black Eyed Peas as well as other prominent rap groups, such as Outkast and the Wu-Tang Clan. The members of this band are myself, Adham Fathalla, Damaq Zain, Gabriel Mendez, and Saif. Since the band's style greatly derives from the work of popular Hip Hop artists, Somber Flipside will mainly have a genre of Pop/ Rap. This group was formed in the mid 2000s, and the musicians within the Somber Flipside group have had renowned success in establishing themselves as a prominent voice in the Rap Industry as well as representing socially sensitive topics (topics which other groups wouldn't handle).
|
Artist Mise-en-Scene
Since the band's style greatly derives from the work of popular artists such as Black Eyed Peas, Outkast and other famous Hip Hop groups, Somber Flipside will mainly have a Mise-en-scene of urban surroundings and grunge clothing. Since the band follows a Rap genre, the band will wear clothing that fits with the genre, such as grunge jeans, t-shirts, and sneakers, rather than leather jackets or super bright outfits. As the band follows a Rap genre, the band will wear urban clothing, such as grunge jeans, t-shirts, hoodies, and sneakers, rather than leather jackets or super bright outfits. Since the band also follows a Hip Hop genre, the band may also wear casual clothing that fits with their audience. The band's music itself will revolve around social and political topics since it follows socially relevant themes, rather than just focusing on money or wealth, as these topics don't appeal to the audience of a Hip Hop/ Rap group, or not primarily at least.
|
How the Music Video will look (IN THEORY)
I intend to produce my music video in a style similar to that of the Hip Hop group, Black Eyed Peas. This means that the music video will consist of live performance, as well as a narrative style of moving image (also seen with artists of other genres such as Taylor Swift or Pan!c At The Disco). I will incorporate scenes that symbolise the performed song's lyrics in order to keep the audience's attention hooked and appeal to a wider audience that enjoys narrative music videos. This ensures that the band's video is commercially successful as well as staying in line with their genre.
|
Proposing my song choice + Feedback
I have proposed my idea to use Where is the Love by the Black Eyed Peas as my music video's song to my teacher. I have stated that I intend to heavily focus on the theme of Live Performance, in order to fit my video within the genre of Rap (since individual artists and Hip Hop groups both produce great amounts of performance videos for their songs). My teacher has stated that its critical for me to include a narrative, because solely making a music video based off of live performance would either be impossible to do, or will look bland and repetitive for the viewer.

Videoboard
In my videoboard, I'm going to pool a series of images and gifs of styles and genres which I want my artist to follow. This applies to both within the music video and within the social media pages. This videoboard will mainly contain performance styles, clothing, and other topics or titles which link to the genre of Hip Hop and Rap. All of the ideas can be seen below:
The main ideas that I'm referencing through these pictures are the style and colours of the artists' clothing, as well as the high level of direct address which each artist uses. The themes of casual-ness are clearly depicted through the frequent use of hoodies, tracksuits, and overall -informal attire. Using a videoboard assists me greatly in compiling a general set of ideas regarding the mise-en-scène of my artist, as well as how I want the music video to appear from the audience's perspective. Through using various images of existing Hip Hop and Rap artists, as well as stills from the music video which I want to base my work off of, I'm able to effectively compile ideas to use for my music video project.

The Song I will be using
|
Where is the Love - Black Eyed Peas
For my music video, I will be using Where is the Love by Black Eyed Peas. I feel that this is one of the most iconic songs ever made within the Hip Hop genre, as the song itself is more or less a cry for an end to the violence within America. The song opens up heavy topics paired with a catchy flow and criticises the level of brutality which the people of America face. Another reason why I believe this song is a good choice to use, is because my artist is a Hip Hop group, and the Black Eyed Peas are one of the most prominent artists of this genre. |

- 1st Verse (Will.i.am)
- 2nd Verse (Taboo Nawasha)
- Chorus (Justin Timberlake)
- Outro (We only got 1 world)

- Where is the Love was written following the 9/11 attacks which took place on September 11th, 2001
- The song was written in 2003, and scrutinises the intense level of hate and violence which has swept America
- Following 9/11, hate crimes towards people of colour increased drastically
- The song was also re-released in 2016 as hate crimes were still a massive issue
- The song's meaning has evolved from mainly being about racial hate and brutal military violence to also linking with current hate towards people of other genders
- The video also reflects on the immigration crisis' and other issues within America
Location Mise-en-Scene
Mise-en-Scene refers to the arrangement of scenery, props, and basically the overall look of the setting in general. In terms of the mise-en-scéne of my locations, some of the settings that I'm looking for have little to no eye-catching colours (in order to keep the viewer's focus on the artist/lead characters), but still have enough scenery to evoke an atmosphere of urban-ness. This could mean open-air areas such as streets, with natural lighting to add a further level of authenticity, as well as controlled environments where I can make sure all of the viewer's focus is played exactly on the subject. Since I'm looking for diversity in my location choices, the settings of my video will have different visual characteristics in order to make sure the viewer doesn't find the video repetitive. This could include locations such as restaurants or other urban areas that have scenery fitting within my genre. The reason for this theme in locations is due to the fact that I plan to base my music video off of a Hip Hop song, meaning part of the video has to include some aspect of an urban atmosphere. In order to add more variety to my work, I will also look into other more eye-catching areas such as beaches and coasts.

Location Recce
The locations that I have analysed are:
The BSM Filming Studio is a useful location to use due to it containing a vast amount of filming equipment (such as green screens, spotlights, and curtains to make sure no light can enter the scene and potentially ruin the quality of the shot. The main con I can see with using this location is that its a relatively small room, so filming may be slightly cramped. The Ad Dimaniyat Islands are appealing to me due to the eye-catching scenery and lack of other people (since the place is also a nature reserve, but people can book boat tours to check out the island's waters). I analysed Shatti Beach, which was mainly just to checklist that I've scouted other tropical locations, but I don't have any plans to film at this area. This is due to the fact that the beach is crowded with people, which puts the viewer off of focusing on the main subject, and the scenery (in my opinion at least) is of a lesser quality to that of the Ad Dimaniyat Islands. One of the locations that I've examined for filming my music video is the Al Sarooj Bridge in Muscat. This is because the location is out in the open and has a nice view, with cars passing by constantly under a large walkway. This is an optimal filming location as I can use both the bridge and the sidewalk as a filming area for short clips (e.g. as footage for the instrumental intro to Where is the Love). The last of the locations that I've examined for filming my music video, is my house. This makes it easy to access and record scenes for my video, and two: there's a variety of areas inside and outside of my house which I can use to film. The last of my planned locations for examining are the general streets of MQ and Shatti, as I need urban areas to help set the tone of a Hip Hop video. |
Chosen Locations
In terms of locations for my music video's filming, I have developed my main ideas for where I can film. These locations are the Filming Studio in BSM, the Al Sarooj Bridge, my house, and the streets of MQ and Oman. The Filming Studio is useful as it contains a green screen and other useful equipment to improve the quality of my video. The Al Sarooj Bridge is an optimal area for me to film as its a very open, and I find that the scenery for the bridge is nice enough to establish my artist. The general streets within the area of MQ and Shatti are also optimal, as I can use this as the main filming locations for the verses of my music video, however I'll need to find places which aren't crowded.

Equipment Ideas
In terms of filming equipment, I already have a variety of my own personal filming gear that I can use for the production of my music video. This includes a Nikon D500, a GoPro, a DJI Osmo gimbal (which is able to record footage using its own built-in camera, and can also be plugged into my phone to record through a smartphone interface), and my iPhone. Any equipment that I need from the school will be for locations inside the school, meaning that I don't have to borrow any equipment for long periods of time. This includes equipment such as spotlights, instruments (for the live performance scenes), and greenscreens.

Treatment
As of right now, the plan for my music video is to implement a combination of performance and narrative alongside Where is the Love, an acclaimed song by the Black Eyed Peas. The style of the music video will mainly be performance driven, and I plan to use urban sites around Oman as well as private filming areas within BSM for my filming locations. I am using my own equipment to record and edit my video, with the exception of the Adobe Creative Cloud Suite which is provided by the school Media department. The cast for my music video will consist of a group of peers who I'm familiar with, all of which have agreed to take part in the production of my video. The overall genre of the music video will be Hip Hop and Rap. The cast within this music video will follow the codes and conventions of the Hip Hop and Rap genres, through wearing urban clothing, performing the song live, and setting a large portion of the music video within an urban location.
The images on the right are used to represent the album that Where is the Love was released in, as well as a group photo of the group that produced the music. Where is the Love came from the album "Elephunk", and instantly became the group's most successful single (following its release as a single). Black Eyed Peas (seen in the group photo to the right) is a Hip Hop group which was formed in 1995 (originally consisting of the trio: Will.i.am, Apl.de.ap and Taboo, and later also Kim Hill). Knowing the background behind both the song and the song's producers is highly important towards successfully producing an admirable music video.

The pictures on the right of this text are the equipment which I'll use when producing my Music Video. This includes a Nikon D500 (A high quality camera which I'm personally experienced with using, meaning I can handle and use it more efficiently than if I used a school-leased camera), a GoPro (which is important in terms of recording underwater, or in bad weather conditions, as the camera is designed to record in various environments while still maintaining a high quality, a DJI Osmo gimbal (which is able to record footage using its own built-in camera, and can also be plugged into my phone to record through a smartphone interface), and my iPhone (which is able to record in 4K).

|
The pictures on the right of this text are used to symbolize the genre of clothing as well as the setting of my music video location (the setting that conforms to my selected genre). The picture with the man on the street is used to show the style of clothing that I plan to use within my music video as its very casual and not too flashy, enforcing exactly what I'm implying by the style of my cast's clothing. The second photo is used to represent the location of my music video, as the picture shown, was taken while the band was performing live onstage, with spotlights shining on the band.
|
|
In terms of the cinematography within my music video, there will be a large number of close up shots within the initial segment of the video, in order to identify and introduce each of the band members to the viewer. Close up shots will also be utilized in order to emphasize the live performance theme of the video. Medium shots will also be used frequently in order to allow the performer's expressions to be effectively received by the viewer (By this I mean facial expressions and other forms of body movement which wouldn't have been seen when filming with a close up shot). Wide shots, and extreme wide shots, will be used within the music video in order to introduce and transition from the different locations.
Brand Guidelines
Brand Guidelines are essentially the Mise-en-Scene for your artist's portrayal. These are useful towards ensuring that your artist appeals to their target audience as much as possible, including aspects such as:
- Information about your artist’s history and values.
- Guidelines on logo usage including color palette, file format(s), minimum and maximum sizes, contexts, spacing, and usage permissions e.g. where it should and shouldn’t appear.
- Color palette.
- Fonts and text sizes - both print and digital.
- Tone of voice.
- Styles and types of imagery, icons, and photography to be used.
- My artist is an American-based group, consisting of young-adult musicians (however, not young to the extent in which they look like teenagers), who produce Hip Hop music for a teenaged audience, as well as young adults, due to the theme and topics of their songs.
- The logo for my artist is placed below, consisting of a simple background, along with the name of the band plastered in the front. The "Somber" in my artists name is done to help identify the group's focus on heavy social topics. The "Flipside" gives off a tone of retro urban-ness, and brings back the group's identity into the Hip Hop genre.
- The "S" in the logo will be somewhat dull and gloomy, in order to fit with the theme of sombreness, however the "F" will be painted in a bright red colour, to grab the viewer's attention and make the logo stand out.
- The logo's in the format of a PNG, as this format is lossless and ensures that my image will be of a high quality/resolution. This logo will be used for my artists Social Media account.
- The color palette for my artist's brand is bright and eye-catching, which aligns with how Hip Hop groups try to stand out from blander genres. The themes of eye-catching-ness which I've referenced can be seen above, on my artist's logo, to make representing the colours and styles which I'm referring to more specific.
- The fonts for my logo are bold and recognisable, with the initials 'S' and 'F' being clearly marked for the viewer.
- The tone of my artist group's voices will be loud and clear, which fits with other Hip Hop and Rap artists, therefore further aligning my artist with common codes and conventions of their genre.
- The style of my artist's imagery will be relatively bright but also casual, as I want the artists to be presented as no more than average people, as I feel that this would appeal to my target audience, rather than portraying them e.g. angelically.
Shot List
Props and Costumes
Since the band follows a Rap genre, the band will wear clothing that fits with the genre, such as grunge jeans, t-shirts, and sneakers, rather than leather jackets or super bright outfits. Since the band also follows a Hip Hop genre, the band may also wear casual clothing that fits with their audience. Acquiring costumes for this video will be fairly easy, as the clothing is neither expensive or hard to find, and casual clothing is pretty much in everyone's wardrobe. In terms of props, I believe the main items that will be utilised in my video are a just ambient food items for eating and drinking (as well as setting the scene). Because the majority of the song is vocal rather than instrumental, there isn't much necessity towards acquiring live instruments

Main Cast Profile
Storyboard
The storyboard that I've developed gives a general overview of my plans for the second verse of the music video's song. The image quality became degraded for reasons which I do not know, so I'll give a developed overview of what is on the storyboard plan. Each section specifies an exact shot from the scene, with information being given on the description of the shot, the style of the shot (e.g. medium shot, wide shot etc.) as well as how I will film the shot. Different filming methods include using a camera, a gimbal, and an iPhone. The shots which are on the storyboard are all performance shots, as the majority of my music video relies on live performance in order to convey the lyrics.

Storyboard Animatic
Below is a button which links to an animatic I made, based on the storyboard above. This will represent how each slide links to the lyrics, and will further assist me in planning how I'll produce my music video.
Location Release Form
The location release form provided below is a signature from my landlord, Paul Winn, which allows my production team to work within the specified premises. The location release form gives me the right to access the area specified within the permit, Villa 1928, Way 1934, stating that the "Location owner hereby consents to permit Production Company employees, agents and all necessary production equipment to be in and around the Location on November 17th 2021 for the purposes of production in connection with the above Motion Picture. Where is the Love will start being filmed on the 17/11/2021 with unlimited time. This includes cuts, retakes, scenes being redone, and changes to scenery. Other privileges for my film crew can be seen with the gaining of full ownership over the material filmed onsite, with the form stating that "Location owner acknowledges and agrees that all right, title and interest in all footage of the Location captured by Production Company during the aforementioned day(s) will belong solely and completely to Production Company", meaning that it's (legally) impossible for my footage to be seized by an outside organisation. Legal action cannot be taken out against me or my production team as the location form states that "the rights granted in this agreement do not violate the right of any organisation". This form is finalised by an official signature

Call Sheet
Production Team (Crew)
My production team consists of Damaq, Daryll, Adham, Saif and Gabriel. Each of these members also appear on the music video itself, as they are part of the acting cast for my project. The aforementioned members have been chosen to help assist me in producing my music video, as they are dependable in helping set up equipment, ensuring that the right shot is captured, and showing up on time to help produce my project. Gabriel and Saif are especially important towards the production of my video as they have learnt and will perform the main verses of the song. This is extremely useful due to the fact that the majority of my video will be live performance. Overall these crew members have been brought in to help speed up the time that it takes to set up filming equipment e.g. lighting, cameras etc.

Risk Assessment
Below I have constructed a risk assessment to predict any possible hazards or dangers while filming, and what I can do to prevent these incidents from occurring.
Contingency Plan
Below is a contingency plan which I've constructed in case any of the aforementioned incidents in my risk assessment occur, and allows me to plan exactly what I should do in any of the situations.
