My Production Logo
The logo for my production company in terms of appearance is relatively simple, however there are some details in the logo that help identify this company within the rock genre. Headstock refers to a part of a guitar, which is the main instrument used within rock music. The gramophone record on which the text is placed on is used to symbolize my production's specialization in music, as well as adding an object to pull my audience's attention towards the logo and my production's identity. In terms of the logo's relation to my music video, this logo will be flourished at the start of the video in order to make sure the viewer immediately sees who contributed in the video's production.

My Artist's Title: Somber Flipside
Somber Flipside is an Alternative Pop band, consisting of a guitarist, a drummer, a bass guitarist, and a lead singer. When making this band, the majority of my inspiration came from the Rock band, Foo Fighters, as well as other prominent mid 2000s/ late 1990s bands, such as Pearl Jam, Nirvana, and Sound Garden. The members of this band are myself, Adham Fathalla, Damaq Zain, and Gabriel Mendez. Since the band's style greatly derives from the work of popular artists such as Nirvana, Foo Fighters, Pearl Jam and other famous rock bands, Somber Flipside will mainly have a genre of Alternative Rock. Since the band follows a rock genre, the band will wear clothing that fits with the genre, such as grunge jeans, t-shirts, and sneakers, rather than leather jackets or super bright outfits. Since the band also follows an alternative genre, the band may also wear casual clothing that fits with their audience. The band's music itself will revolve around personal/emotional topics since it follows socially relevant themes, rather than just focusing on money or wealth, as these topics don't appeal to the audience of an Alternative Rock band, primarily at least.

How the Music Video will look (IN THEORY)
I intend to produce my music video in a style similar to that of popular Alternative bands, such as Arctic Monkeys, Foo Fighters and Oasis. This means that the music video will consist of live performance, as well as a narrative style of moving image (also seen with artists of other genres such as Taylor Swift or Pan!c At The Disco). I will incorporate scenes that symbolize the performed song's lyrics in order to keep the audience's attention hooked and appeal to a wider audience that enjoys narrative music videos. This ensures that the band's video is commercially successful as well as staying in line with their genre.
|
Proposing my song choice + Feedback
I have proposed my idea to use Everlong by Foo Fighters as my music video's song to my teacher. I have stated that I intend to pair live performance in order to fit within the genre of Alternative Rock (since bands such as Arctic Monkeys were renown for their performance videos such as "I bet you look good on the Dancefloor"). My teacher has stated that its critical for me to include a narrative, because the lyrics of Everlong are not designed in a way to only be live performance (if the song's music video is solely live performance, then the video will become repetitive, and the viewer will get bored). Because of this, I will design and plan out a story board for my video's narrative.
|
Videoboard
In my videoboard, I'm going to pool a series of images and gifs of styles and genres which I want my artist to follow. This applies to both within the music video and within the social media pages. This videoboard will mainly contain performance styles, clothing, and other topics or titles which link to the genre of Rock. All of the ideas can be seen below:
The Song I will be using
|
Everlong - Foo Fighters
For my music video, I will be using Everlong by Foo Fighters. I feel that this is one of the most iconic songs (if not the most iconic song) made within the Alternative Rock genre, as the song itself follows themes and contains that lyrics that greatly appeal to an Alternative audience. This is seen as the song mainly acts as a love letter to the past, practically questioning if anything will ever be as good as back then. I also feel that this song is a good choice to use as my artist is an Alternative Rock band, and the Foo Fighters are one of the most prominent artists of this genre. |
Everlong - Lyrics Analysis
Background of the song
Websites used for information:
https://www.songfacts.com/facts/foo-fighters/everlong
https://www.songfacts.com/facts/foo-fighters/everlong
- Everlong is a song by the American Rock band, Foo Fighters, and was released in August 1997 as the second single from the band's album "The Color and the Shape".
- This song is often interpreted to be about the drug addictions and bad habits of the late Kurt Cobain, who was in Nirvana with Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl, who wrote this song. However this is false
- According to an interview with Grohl in Mojo magazine, he penned this song during one of the lowest points in his life over Christmas 1996.
- Dave Grohl wrote the song about Veruca Salt frontwoman Louise Post, whom he was dating after separating from his first wife, Jennifer Youngblood.
- He said "Everlong" is about "being connected to someone so much that not only do you love them physically and spiritually, but when you sing along with them you harmonize perfectly".
- The song evokes real love, that feeling of shyness, yet excitement, like the first time for anything. It's a feeling that is so strong that you want it to last forever, even though you know nothing ever lasts forever.
Location Mise-en-Scene
Mise-en-Scene refers to the arrangement of scenery, props, and basically the overall look of the setting in general. In terms of my location, some of the settings that I'm looking for have little to no props or eye-catching colors (in order to keep the viewer's focus on the artist/lead character). This could mean areas such as stages, with artificial lighting to put heightened focus on the subject of interest, as well as controlled environments where I can make sure no props or other aspects are able to distract the viewer's attention. However I am also looking for diversity in my location choices, so this means that part of my video will be set in eye-catching settings to make sure the viewer doesn't find the video repetitive. This could include locations such as beaches or tropical areas that have beautiful scenery. The reason for this large contrast in locations is due to the fact that I plan to base my music video off of a rock song, meaning part of the video has to include some aspect of live performance in order to align with viewer expectations. However I also feel that a music video solely based around live performance would lose the audience's interest, so I'm integrating a partial narrative theme to spice things up.

Location Recce
The locations that I have analyzed are:

Chosen Locations
In terms of locations for my music video's filming, I have developed my main ideas for where I can film. These locations are the Oryx Theater in BSM, the Filming Studio in BSM, and the Ad Dimaniyat Islands (located about 70km west of Muscat, Oman). The Oryx Theater is a useful location for me to use as it contains a stage in which I can use for live performance footage. The Filming Studio is useful as it contains a green screen and other useful equipment to improve the quality of my video. I am also planning to use the Ad Dimaniyat Islands as a location as it gives a feeling of diversity to my used locations, and the water is relatively crystal clear, which allows me to record underwater scenes for my music video (which is actually something that I plan to do when filming the music video).

|
Equipment Ideas
In terms of filming equipment, I already have a variety of my own personal filming gear that I can use for the production of my music video. This includes a Nikon D500, a GoPro, a DJI Osmo gimbal (which is able to record footage using its own built-in camera, and can also be plugged into my phone to record through a smartphone interface), and my iPhone. Any equipment that I need from the school will be for locations inside the school, meaning that I don't have to borrow any equipment for long periods of time. This includes equipment such as spotlights, instruments (for the live performance scenes), and greenscreens.

Treatment
As of right now, the plan for my music video is to implement a combination of performance and narrative alongside Everlong, an acclaimed song by Foo Fighters. The style of the music video will be mainly narrative driven, and I plan to use sites in BSM as well as exotic areas by the coast of Oman for my filming locations. I am using my own equipment to record and edit my video, with the exception of the Adobe Creative Cloud Suite which is provided by the school Media department. The cast for my music video will consist of 4 people: me, a media student, as well as 2 peers in my year group, all of which have agreed to take part in the production of my video. The overall genre of the music video will be Alternative Rock. The cast within this music video will follow the codes and conventions of a Alternative Rock genre, through wearing urban clothing, performing part of the song live, and setting a large portion of the music video within a performance stage location.
The images on the right are used to represent the album that Everlong was released in, as well as a group photo of the band that produced the music. Everlong came from the album "The Color and the Shape", and instantly became the band's most successful single (following its release as a single ). Foo Fighters (seen in the group photo to the right) is an Alternative Rock band which was formed following the disbanding of Nirvana (Foo Fighters was highly composed of former Nirvana Members, including the lead singer of Foo Fighters). Knowing the background behind both the song and the song's producers is highly important towards successfully producing an admirable music video.

The pictures on the right of this text are the equipment which I'll use when producing my Music Video. This includes a Nikon D500 (A high quality camera which I'm personally experienced with using, meaning I can handle and use it more efficiently than if I used a school-leased camera), a GoPro (which is important in terms of recording underwater, or in bad weather conditions, as the camera is designed to record in various environments while still maintaining a high quality, a DJI Osmo gimbal (which is able to record footage using its own built-in camera, and can also be plugged into my phone to record through a smartphone interface), and my iPhone (which is able to record in 4K).

The pictures on the right of this text are used to symbolize the genre of clothing as well as the setting of my music video location (the setting that conforms to my selected genre). The picture with the man on the street is used to show the style of clothing that I plan to use within my music video as its very casual and not too flashy, enforcing exactly what I'm implying by the style of my cast's clothing. The second photo is used to represent the location of my music video, as the picture shown, was taken while the band was performing live onstage, with spotlights shining on the band.

|
In terms of the cinematography within my music video, there will be a large number of close up shots within the initial segment of the video, in order to identify and introduce each of the band members to the viewer. Close up shots will also be utilized in order to emphasize the live performance theme of the video. Medium shots will also be used frequently in order to allow the performer's expressions to be effectively received by the viewer (By this I mean facial expressions and other forms of body movement which wouldn't have been seen when filming with a close up shot. Wide shots, and extreme wide shots, will be used within the music video in order to introduce the different locations (I will also include transitions between each change in locations in order to make the video smoother for the viewer.

Brand Guidelines
Brand Guidelines are essentially the Mise-en-Scene for your artist's portrayal. These are useful towards ensuring that your artist appeals to their target audience as much as possible, including aspects such as:
- Information about your artist’s history and values.
- Guidelines on logo usage including color palette, file format(s), minimum and maximum sizes, contexts, spacing, and usage permissions e.g. where it should and shouldn’t appear.
- Color palette.
- Fonts and text sizes - both print and digital.
- Tone of voice.
- Styles and types of imagery, icons, and photography to be used.
- My artist is an American-based band, consisting of young-adult musicians (however, not young to the extent in which they look like teenagers), who produce rock music for a teen-aged audience, as well as young adults, due to the theme and topics of their songs.
- The logo for my artist is placed below, consisting of a simple background pattern, along with the name of the band plastered over the background. The "Somber" in my artists name is in a dull/plain color, and is then covered by an eye-catching neon red "Flipside". The logo's in the format of a PNG, as this format is lossless and ensures my image will be of a high quality/resolution. This logo will be used for my artists Social Media accounts, as well as being used as a logo to be put over my music videos.
- The color palette for my artist's brand is primarily based around 2 colors: Black, and White. These are seen above, on my artist's logo, to make representing the colors I'm referring to more specific.
- The fonts for my logo are bold and recognizable, with the initials 'S' and 'F' being clearly marked for the viewer.
- The tone of voice will be loud and clear, which fits with other American Rock artists, therefore aligning my artist with common codes and conventions of their genre.
- The style of my artist's imagery will be relatively bright but also casual, as I want the artists to be presented as no more than average people, as I feel that this would appeal to my target audience, rather than portraying them e.g. angelically.
Shot List
Audition Tapes
The links below lead to google drive files containing the videos of each musician's audition. This includes Damaq Zain's audition for the Drummer role, the Guitarist role, and the Bass Guitarist role.
Props and Costumes
Since the band follows a rock genre, the band will wear clothing that fits with the genre, such as grunge jeans, t-shirts, and sneakers, rather than leather jackets or super bright outfits. Since the band also follows an alternative genre, the band may also wear casual clothing that fits with their audience. Acquiring costumes for this video will be fairly easy, as the clothing is neither expensive or hard to find, and casual clothing is pretty much in everyone's wardrobe. In terms of props, I believe the main items that will be utilized in my video are an electric guitar, a bass, a drumkit, and a microphone. The only props needed for this production in reality are musical equipment, and those will be provided by the school, and will also be used onsite. Other props, that I'm not even able to come up with at this moment, will be my own property.

Cast Profile
Location Release Form
The location release form provided below is a signature from my Media Teacher, Mr. Moul, which allows my production team to work within the school premises. The location release form gives me the right to access the area specified within the permit (The British School of Muscat), stating that the "Releaser grants entrant access to and from 'The British School Muscat' for the purpose of:
Other privileges for my film crew can be seen with the gaining of full ownership over the material filmed onsite, with the form stating that "The Releaser also acknowledges that the entrant shall own all the filming done by the entrant on the premises", meaning that it's (legally) impossible for my footage to be seized by an outside organization. Legal action cannot be taken out against me or my production team as the location form states that "the rights granted in this agreement do not violate the right of any organization". The form is finalized by including the date of the signature, the signature of the releaser, Mr. Moul, and the address of the location which I will be filming within. |
Actor Release Forms
The sheets below are documents that officialize my casts' partnership as a production team. There is a form for each of the musicians/actors that will participate within the filming of my music video.
Call Sheet
Production Team (Crew)
My production team consists of Damaq, Daryll, Adham, Khyzer and Gabriel. Daryll, Damaq, Adham and Gabriel also appear on the music video itself, as they are part of the acting cast for my project. The aforementioned members have been chosen to help assist me in producing my music video, as they are dependable in helping set up equipment, ensuring that the right shot is captured, and showing up on time to help produce my project. Adham and Damaq are also useful as they can actually play their allocated instruments, meaning they can make the sound of our live performance seem similar or even replicant of the actual song we are covering. This is extremely useful due to the fact that I'm implementing themes of live action performance. Other crew members have been brought in to speed up the time that it takes to set up equipment e.g. lighting, cameras etc.
